Kyoto may be popular for all the cultural activities tourists can do in the city, but it doesn't exactly have a buzzing nightlife. The gay scene is small, especially compared to other major tourist cities in Japan. In fact, most people simply take a quick half-hour train ride to Osaka where the nightlife, including the gay scene, is bigger.

Apple is a small, men-only, foreigner-friendly gay bar in Kyoto. Owner Yuji goes out of his way to make visitors feel at home. Free karaoke runs every day, and on busy nights the tiny bar can turn into a full-on singalong.
Yuji is also happy to chat about Kyoto and share tips on what to see. Cash only, so bring some yen.

bell KYOTO is a foreigner-friendly gay bar at Sanjo Ohashi, where tourists and local customers mix over drinks, karaoke, and J-pop. Owner Rin speaks English and is happy to chat or point visitors towards good places to eat and things to do in the area.
The ¥1,000 cover charge includes a selection of snacks, and karaoke is there if you fancy grabbing the mic.

Azure is a long-running men-only gay bar on Kiyamachi Street, Kyoto’s main nightlife strip. Tucked away on the third floor, it’s a small bar where the local crowd readily gets involved with visitors. The staff speaks limited English, but use Google Translate to chat with international customers, who can join in with karaoke.
A table charge applies, with light snacks served alongside the first drink.
